Angles on Earth

Being married to a nurse I know first hand what nurses go through. She no longer works directly with patients but I have heard about the patients that touched her heart, made her mad or didn’t make it.  Everybody knows nurses are important. Everybody knows they have a hard job but most people don’t realize the physical and mental toll that the job takes on nurses.

When most of us have a bad day at work that means we didn’t get the sale we hoped for or maybe we didn’t get the promotion we wanted. When a nurse goes to work and has a bad day it could mean they watched a young mother or father of the children they became friends with died. They get to work to find that kind old man or lady they have been getting to know bed is empty. Maybe the patient they have spent so much time trying to help and have given more time to because they thought they needed it now has accused them of neglect because they are confused or disoriented. But you still have to be investigated. Maybe that precious child that has stolen their heart dies. Maybe they have so many patients to take care of they don’t have time to eat lunch or even use the bathroom.

Now with COVID going on they have to do all this with a special suit on and a mask. It’s hot and can be hard to breath but they do it. There have been many nurses probably numbering in the thousands that have gotten sick even after taking all the precautions. Some died. They go through all of this to help us. Then, they go home and try to be mom to their kids and wife to their husbands. It takes a special person to be a nurse. Most of us are not strong enough to be one. Next time you are in the hospital be sure to thank the nurses that help you. You never know what they are going through so a kind word from you may make all the difference. Thank you, nurses! The world is better with you in it!
